LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A judge ended Lindsay Lohan's supervised probation on Thursday, giving the actress her freedom after nearly two years of constant court hearings and threats of jail.
Lohan thanked Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner for her patience and let out a sigh of relief as she exited the courtroom after the brief hearing.
The judge had imposed a series of strict probation requirements including cleanup duty at the morgue and counseling sessions last year, and Lohan met all the requirements by Thursday's deadline.
"I just want to say thank you for being fair. It's really opened a lot of doors for me," the 25-year-old Lohan said.
Sautner told the problem-prone actress she was not going to give a lecture, but reminded her that she will remain on informal probation until May 2014 for taking a necklace without permission last year.
"You need to live your life in a more mature way, stop the nightclubbing and focus on your work," Sautner said.
If Lohan does get into more trouble, she could face a 245-day jail sentence in the necklace case. The judge said she understood that Lohan may be frustrated with constant scrutiny by paparazzi and others, but noted, "That's the life you chose."
A probation report filed in the case noted that Los Angeles police are investigating a nightclub manager's claims that Lohan struck him with her Porsche two weeks ago, but no charges have been filed.
The hearing came as Lohan's career is showing hints of a comeback. She is due to guest star on an upcoming episode of "Glee," recently hosted a highly rated but criticized episode of "Saturday Night Live" and is set to star as Elizabeth Taylor in a television movie.
"Lindsay is already talking about her next few projects," her spokesman Steve Honig wrote in a statement after the hearing. "She is ready to start the next chapter in her life and get back to work and doing what she loves to do ? making movies."
Roles have been hard to come by for Lohan in recent years, as she has been in-and-out of courtrooms, spent time in rehab and was sentenced to jail.
Her failure to complete alcohol education classes in 2010 prompted a judge to sentence her to jail for the first time since the actress served 84 minutes for a pair of drunken driving arrests in 2007. A court-ordered rehab stint was cut short, but Lohan relapsed before year's end and was sent by another judge to the Betty Ford Center, where she was involved in a fight with a rehab worker.
Within three weeks of her release in January 2011, Lohan was accused of stealing the $2,500 necklace from a store near her Venice home and soon landed in Sautner's court. The judge rejected rehab and tried to send Lohan to jail as punishment. Overcrowding reduced a November 2011 sentence to a few hours, although the actress did serve 35 days on house arrest earlier in the year.
Lohan is far from the only celebrity to encounter trouble complying with the terms of alcohol-related cases and ending up in jail. Fellow female celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie and Khloe Kardashian have all been sentenced to jail and faced multiple court hearings because they didn't properly comply with their sentences. All their cases have long since ended.

Today Google, together with the Tourism Authority of Thailand, announced that Street View imagery of three major areas in Thailand is now live on Google Maps. This imagery allows users in Thailand and around the world to view and navigate 360-degree street-level imagery of greater Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. Thailand is the 35th country where Street View imagery is available.
Using Street View Imagery of Thailand
In areas where Street View is available, you can access street-level imagery by zooming into the lowest level on Google Maps, or by dragging the orange ?Pegman? icon on the left-hand side of the map onto a blue highlighted street.
Locals can use the 360? panoramas to check out a restaurant before arriving, figure out driving directions, arrange meeting points, or get to know their own town better. Thai businesses can also benefit from Street View technology by embedding Google Maps directly into their site. Hotels, for example, can easily show what their guests what the building looks like on the street and also a sense of the surrounding neighborhood. Ancient civilizations reveal ways to manage fisheries for sustainability

In the search for sustainability of the ocean's fisheries, solutions can be found in a surprising place: the ancient past.
In a study published on March 23 in the journal Fish and Fisheries, a team of marine scientists reconstructed fisheries yields over seven centuries of human habitation in Hawaii and the Florida Keys, the largest coral reef ecosystems in the United States, and evaluated the management strategies associated with periods of sustainability. The results surprised them.
"Before European contact, Native Hawaiians were catching fish at rates that far exceed what reefs currently provide society," said John "Jack" N. Kittinger, co-author and an early career fellow at the Center for Ocean Solutions at Stanford University. "These results show us that fisheries can be both highly productive and sustainable, if they're managed effectively." In contrast, historical fisheries in Florida were characterized by boom and bust, with serial depletions of highly valuable species for export markets. Today many species that were the target of 19th and early 20th century fisheries in Florida - including green turtles, sawfish, conch and groupers - have severely reduced populations or are in danger of extinction.
"Seven hundred years of history clearly demonstrate that management matters," said Loren McClenachan, co-author and assistant professor of environmental studies at Colby College. "Ancient Hawaiian societies used sophisticated tools similar to innovative conservation strategies used today, like marine protected areas and restrictions on harvest of vulnerable species like sharks." The difference, the authors explained, was in the way fisheries governance systems were structured. Regulations were developed locally with the buy-in of community members, but they were also effectively enforced with methods that now would be considered draconian. "Today, no management system comes close to achieving this balance, and as a result, resource depletion and collapse is common," said McClenachan.
The authors were able to characterize historical catch rates in Florida and Hawaii through an extensive review of archival sources, including species-specific catch records from the 1800s and archaeological reconstructions of human population densities and per-capita fish consumption back to the 1300s. The authors of the study, entitled "Multicentury trends and the sustainability of coral reef fisheries in Hawai'i and Florida," point to the U.S. National Ocean Policy as an example of emerging attempts to manage ocean ecosystems more holistically, and local fisheries co-management as a modern way of including community members in designing effective fishing regulations. However, the authors caution that effective enforcement needs to go hand in hand with the development of local governance. "The ancient Hawaiians punished transgressors with corporal punishment," observed Kittinger. "Clearly, we don't recommend this, but it's easy to see there's room to tighten up today's enforcement efforts."

In the search for sustainability of the ocean's fisheries, solutions can be found in a surprising place: the ancient past.
In a study published on March 23 in the journal Fish and Fisheries, a team of marine scientists reconstructed fisheries yields over seven centuries of human habitation in Hawaii and the Florida Keys, the largest coral reef ecosystems in the United States, and evaluated the management strategies associated with periods of sustainability. The results surprised them.
"Before European contact, Native Hawaiians were catching fish at rates that far exceed what reefs currently provide society," said John "Jack" N. Kittinger, co-author and an early career fellow at the Center for Ocean Solutions at Stanford University. "These results show us that fisheries can be both highly productive and sustainable, if they're managed effectively." In contrast, historical fisheries in Florida were characterized by boom and bust, with serial depletions of highly valuable species for export markets. Today many species that were the target of 19th and early 20th century fisheries in Florida - including green turtles, sawfish, conch and groupers - have severely reduced populations or are in danger of extinction.
"Seven hundred years of history clearly demonstrate that management matters," said Loren McClenachan, co-author and assistant professor of environmental studies at Colby College. "Ancient Hawaiian societies used sophisticated tools similar to innovative conservation strategies used today, like marine protected areas and restrictions on harvest of vulnerable species like sharks." The difference, the authors explained, was in the way fisheries governance systems were structured. Regulations were developed locally with the buy-in of community members, but they were also effectively enforced with methods that now would be considered draconian. "Today, no management system comes close to achieving this balance, and as a result, resource depletion and collapse is common," said McClenachan.

Cylinder hides contents and makes them invisible to magnetic fields
ScienceDaily (Mar. 22, 2012) ? Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona researchers, in collaboration with an experimental group from the Academy of Sciences of Slovakia, have created a cylinder which hides contents and makes them invisible to magnetic fields. The device was built using superconductor and ferromagnetic materials available on the market.
The cylinder is built using high temperature superconductor material, easily refrigerated with liquid nitrogen and covered in a layer of iron, nickel and chrome. This simple and accessible formula has been used to create a true invisibility cloak.
The cylinder is invisible to magnetic fields and represents a step towards the invisibility of light -- an electromagnetic wave. Never before had a device been created with such simplicity or exactness in theoretical calculations.
The invention is published this week in the journal Science.
Researchers at UAB, led by ?lvar S?nchez, lecturer of the Department of Physics, came up with the mathematical formula to design the device. Using an extraordinarily simple equation scientists described a cylinder which in theory is absolutely undetectable to magnetic fields from the outside, and maintains everything in its interior completely isolated from these fields as well.
Equation in hand and with the aim of building the device, UAB researchers contacted the laboratory specializing in the precise measurement of magnetic fields at the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava. Only a few months later the experimental results were clear. The cylinder was completely invisible to magnetic fields, made invisible whatever content was found in its interior and fully isolated it from external fields.
The superconductor layer of the cylinder prevents the magnetic field from reaching the interior, but distorts the external field and thus makes it detectable. To avoid detection, the ferromagnetic outer layer made of iron, nickel and chrome, produce the opposite effect. It attracts the magnetic field lines and compensates the distortion created by the superconductor, but without allowing the field to reach the interior. The global effect is a completely non-existent magnetic field inside the cylinder and absolutely no distortions in the magnetic field outside.
Magnetic fields are fundamental for the production of electric energy -- 99% of energy consumed is generated thanks to the magnetic camps within the turbines found in power stations -- and for the design of engines for all types of mechanic devices, for new advances made in computer and mobile phone memory devices, etc. For this reason controlling this field represents an important achievement in technological development. Scientists are perfectly familiar with the process of creating magnetism. However, the process of cancelling at will is a scientific and technological challenge, and the device created by UAB scientists opens the way for this possibility.
The results of this research project also pave the way for possible medical applications. In the future, similar devices designed by UAB researchers could serve to block a pacemaker or a cochlear implant in a patient needing to undergo a magnetic resonance.

Pattern master wins million-dollar mathematics prize
Imagine I present you with a line of cards labelled 1 through to n, where n is some incredibly large number. I ask you to remove a certain number of cards ? which ones you choose is up to you, inevitably leaving ugly random gaps in my carefully ordered sequence. It might seem as if all order must now be lost, but in fact no matter which cards you pick, I can always identify a surprisingly ordered pattern in the numbers that remain.
As a magic trick it might not equal sawing a woman in half, but mathematically proving that it is always possible to find a pattern in such a scenario is one of the feats that today garnered Endre Szemer?di mathematics' prestigious Abel prize.
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in Oslo awarded Szemer?di the one million dollar prize today for "fundamental contributions to discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science". His specialty was combinatorics, a field that deals with the different ways of counting and rearranging discrete objects, whether they be numbers or playing cards.
The trick described above is a direct result of what is known as Szemer?di's theorem, a piece of mathematics that answered a question first posed by the mathematicians Paul Erd?s and P?l Tur?n in 1936 and that had remained unsolved for nearly 40 years.
Irregular mind
The theorem reveals how patterns can be found in large sets of consecutive numbers with many of their members missing. The patterns in question are arithmetic sequences ? strings of numbers with a common difference such as 3, 7, 11, 15, 19.
Such problems are often fairly easy for mathematicians to pose, but fiendishly difficulty to solve. The book An Irregular Mind, published in honour of Szemer?di's 70th birthday in 2010, stated that "his brain is wired differently than for most mathematicians".
"He's more likely than most to come up with an idea from left field," agrees mathematician Timothy Gowers of the University of Cambridge, who gave a presentation in Oslo on Szemer?di's work following the prize announcement.
Szemer?di actually came late to mathematics, initially studying at medical school for a year and then working in a factory before switching to become a mathematician. His talent was discovered by Erd?s, who was famous for working with hundreds of mathematicians in his lifetime.
Modest winner
When Szemer?di proved his theorem in 1975 he also provided mathematicians with a tool known as the Szemer?di regularity lemma, which gives a deeper understanding of large graphs ? mathematical objects often used to model networked structures such as the internet.
The lemma has also helped computer scientists better understand a technique in artificial intelligence known as "probably approximately correct learning". Szemer?di also worked on another important computing problem related to sorting lists, demonstrating a theoretical limit for sorting using parallel processors, which are found in modern computers.
Speaking on the phone to Gowers after receiving his award, Szemer?di said he was "very happy" but suggested that there were other mathematicians more deserving than himself. Gowers told New Scientist that Szemer?di was "very modest", adding that "he is a worthy winner and a lot of people think this sort of recognition is long overdue in his case".

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Michael Bay thinks "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" fans need to chill.
The 47-year-old director-producer incited outrage among fans of the superhero franchise when he revealed at the Nickelodeon upfront presentation in New York last week that the pizza-loving, crime-fighting turtles would come from an "alien race" in a "Ninja Turtles" film he is producing.
According to franchise lore, mysterious radioactive ooze transformed the turtles into superheroes who battle evildoers.
"Fans need to take a breath and chill," Bay said in a statement posted on his site Monday night. "They have not read the script. Our team is working closely with one of the original creators of 'Ninja Turtles' to help expand and give a more complex back story. Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world."
"Ninja Turtles" debuted as a comic book in 1984 before spawning a franchise that included toys, TV shows, films and video games.
Fans took to Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites to vent about the apparent change to the wisecracking turtles' origins.
Robbie Rist, who voiced the character Michelangelo in the original 1990 live-action film adaptation, said Monday in a Facebook message that Bay is "sodomizing" the original movies and causing "the rape of our childhood memories."
Bay, who directed the past three "Transformers" movies, said last week that "kids are going to believe one day these turtles actually do exist when we are done with this movie" and that they come "from an alien race, and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable."
The new take on the "Ninja Turtles" is set for release next year by Paramount Pictures under the Nickelodeon Movies label.

Social Security Disability Insurance, essentially the first American worker?s compensation plan, was loosely based on the Prussian system, a system which inspired the gloomy author Franz Kafka, who worked within the bureaucracy of the Prussian workers compensation system.
Modern-day workers compensation insurance has at its core the concept of no-fault insurance. The system is set set industrial accidents are going to happen no matter how careful employees are. This system was set up in order to deal with those events.
In the United States, workers comp claims are handled by state compensation boards which are created and overseen legislatively. Each state handles worker?s compensation claims differently, but all of them assign monetary amounts for various body parts and/or injuries.
American workers compensation insurance remained static up until the 1990s. ?The impetus for drastic change was the Americans with Disabilities Act, which became law in 1990.
The Americans with Disabilities Act mandated that employers make ?reasonable accommodation? for employees with disabilities. Due to the ADA, then, employees who suffered back injuries which would previously have gotten them a permanent disability, were now able to continue working due to the fact that their employers were now mandated by law to make accommodations to make their continued work possible.
Because the ADA no longer recognized many disabilities as permanent and complete disabilities, the long-accepted payment schedules no longer made sense.
In one of the most famous workers compensation cases, an employee at the Santa Fe railroad won more than a quarter million dollars as a settlement for permanent total disability under workers comp. His doctor had testified he would never be able to work again to to a back injury he acquired on the job. Less than a week and a half after the settlement, he filed a lawsuit under ADA because he said he was wrongfully terminated due to his disability which was covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The lawsuit was thrown out, of course, but this serves to illuminate the reader as to the massive changes that then had to be done.
